For more than 300 years, people were enslaved in Africa and then brought to North and
South America, where they were sold. In 1808, the United States banned importing more
enslaved people, but slavery continued to exist within the United States.

By 1820, it had been illegal to bring enslaved people from Africa to the United States for
square years. So, by the 1840s, most enslaved people had been born in
the United States. These enslaved people had an African heritage, but they were also
American. Even though enslaved people were given little control over their own lives,
they successfully developed their own new, square culture.
