Objective: Through this project, you will dive deeper into the themes and characters of
Refugee by Alan Gratz , gaining a deeper understanding of the refugee experience across
different time periods and regions. They will demonstrate their comprehension, critical
analysis, and creativity through various components of the Google Slide Deck. #PLEASE
LABEL EACH SLIDE ACCORDING TO THE HIGHLIGHTED TITLES.
1. Title Slide
2. Character Analysis Slide (2-3 slides): Choose one main character from the
novel (Josef, Isabel, or Mahmoud). Create a slide that presents a character
analysis exploring their journey, motivations , strengths, and struggles. Use
textual evidence 3-5 quotes) to support your analysis. This should go beyond
surface level.
3. Theme Exploration Slide 2-3 slides): Select one theme from the novel (e .g. ,
resilience, survival, family , empathy) and create a slide that visually represents
how this theme is portrayed throughout the story. Include quotes, images , and
examples from the text to support your analysis.
4. Historical Research Slide 2-3 slides): Research the historical context of one of
the refugee stories in the novel (e.g., the Holocaust, Cuban Revolution , Syrian
Civil War). Create a slide that provides background information on the events
and circumstances that led to the refugee crisis depicted in the novel.Include
insights into how the author incorporates historical accuracy into the
story.
5. Creative Expression Slide ( 2-4 slides): Choose TWO of the below options to
express your understan ding of the novel and its themes. Options include:
Writing a ( 15-20 sentences) diary entry from the perspective of a
character in the novel.
Creating a multimedia presentation (video or audio)that highlights the
journey of refugees and connects it to current events or personal
reflections.
Designing a storyboard for a scene from the novel (or a timeline of at
least 6-8 important events). Be sure to include dialogue and illustrations.
